Washington Spirit

The Washington Spirit were founded in 2012 as D.C. United Women and joined the NWSL as a founding member for the 2013 season. The club plays at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., which holds 20,000, after earlier spells at the Maryland SoccerPlex and Segra Field. The badge is a torch in navy, red and white set beneath a crown carrying eleven stars for the eleven players on the field, with a single star on the ball for the supporters as the twelfth. The Spirit won the NWSL Championship in 2021, beating the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in extra time, and lifted the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2025. Michele Kang became majority owner in March 2022, the first woman of colour to own an NWSL club.
